About This Trip

Join us on an unforgettable Borneo eco tour and explore the outstanding rainforest and river wilderness of this special island. Trip highlights include:

  • Spend 3 full days in the untouched Danum Valley, with the chance to see orangutans, red leaf langurs, Bornean gibbons, clouded leopards, civets, slow loris, pygmy elephants, and all 8 species of hornbill.
  • Spend time along the Kinabatangan River, known for its exceptional biodiversity. Here we have dusk and dawn boat cruises and night walks.
  • Include our extension to snorkel the world-class coral reefs at Sipadan, part of the Coral Triangle and famous for large pelagics and abundant sea turtles.
  • For families and groups of 4 or more, private tours can be arranged with options to focus on special interests and include additional conservation areas.

Often overlooked by nature travelers, Borneo offers one of the world's most exciting wildlife experiences. Its forests harbor exceptionally high levels of species diversity and endemism, including many rare and unique bird, cat, and primate species.

Our itinerary begins in the jungle, with multiple excursions along the winding Kinabatangan River to look for proboscis monkeys, orangutans, hornbills, crocodiles, and other wildlife. We'll also visit the world famous Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre, where orphaned orangutans are rehabilitated and released back in to the wild, as well as the Sun Bear Conservation Center, which has a similar mission.

Next we’ll explore Danum Valley Conservation Area—43,800 hectares of protected lowland rainforest that is home to an astonishing variety of plants and wildlife, including more than 340 species of birds, 124 species of mammals, 72 species of reptiles, 56 species of amphibians and 200 species of plants per hectare. Rare and endangered species such as the Sumatran rhino, Borneo pygmy elephant, clouded leopard, orangutan, and proboscis monkey can all be seen here, plus much more.

Our optional 4-day trip extension will take you to Mataking Island to snorkel the world-class reefs of nearby Sipadan and Tun Sakaran Marine Park. As part of the Coral Triangle region, its reefs are among the world's most diverse and spectacular. These reefs are famous among snorkelers and divers for outstanding hard and soft corals, diverse fish and macro life, as well as large pelagic species and abundant sea turtles.

Conservation Impact

Founded in 1969, Oceanic Society is America’s oldest 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to ocean conservation. As pioneers of “eco travel,” our expeditions have been designed to directly support our mission. They not only positively impact our travelers, but also the people, places, and wildlife we go to see. A portion of trip fees paid for our Borneo eco tours go to support the conservation centers (Orangutan and Sun Bear) and protected areas that we visit. This includes the Danum Valley Research Center, a renowned tropical research facility that works to provide a scientific understanding of the ecological process and evolutionary mechanisms that maintain tropical rainforests, as well as to provide training opportunities for Malaysian and international researchers in ecology, forestry and related sciences. And Oceanic Society's earnings from the trip are invested back into our global research and conservation programs.
